From "Future Day" to experienced colleague: Bjarne tells how a taster day has shaped his professional career to this day

As a student, I participated in the 'Future Day' project, where students spend a day shadowing at a company. I spent the day at Hellmann in Hamburg and really enjoyed it. Afterwards, I was offered an internship, which I accepted. Due to my family background, I was already enthusiastic about freight forwarding and logistics, but after the internship, I knew for sure: This is what I want to do professionally! After graduating from school, I then pursued an apprenticeship at Hellmann.

Logistics is a key role in the global economy. It connects many players from manufacturers to end consumers. Being a part of this supply chain also fascinates me anew every day, because I myself can ensure that it becomes a bit better through forward-looking work such as optimizing the routes used, eliminating imminent problems and dealing with disruptions spontaneously.

Since completing my training, I have been working in the intermodal team in sea freight. This means that I am responsible for planning our customers' pre-carriage and on-carriage containers, checking them for a suitable and cost-efficient mode of transport (truck, rail, inland waterway vessel), scheduling our own fleet if necessary or purchasing, controlling and monitoring the necessary loading space from partner freight forwarders. In addition, I act as a direct contact person for customer inquiries and concerns that may arise during the transport of the modes of transport.

Looking back, it's the best decision I could have made. I was able to gain some experience in the professional world beforehand that was not particularly positive. When I started my apprenticeship at Hellmann, I was sure after some time that I had now taken the right step. I still notice that today.

My first impression at the time was that Hellmann as a company attaches great importance to the interaction of individual employees with each other. The respective managers have also strongly internalized this. This impression has been confirmed to this day. But I also really appreciate how Hellmann takes care of its employees as an employer. There are numerous financial offers, health or sports offers, mobile massages or counselling services.
