Starting Out as an Intern: Leon’s Journey to Becoming an HR Project & Data Specialist at Hellmann

Leon Pohl
HR Project & Data Specialist
Osnabrück
Hi Leon, great to have you with us today! How did you come to join Hellmann, and what was your path leading up to it?
After finishing high school, I completed both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in business administration. During my studies, I worked at the university as a student assistant – including roles as a tutor, mentor, and assistant to various professors. I first did an internship in project portfolio management in the insurance sector, and then I joined Hellmann for another internship in the HR Systems & Processes team. During that internship, I was offered a permanent position as an HR Project & Data Specialist, which I started in May 2024 while finishing my master’s thesis.
What was your personal highlight during your time as a working student?
My personal highlight was definitely being part of the Workday implementation project at Hellmann. It was a major transformation initiative within HR, and even though it was a large team effort, I had the chance to take on real responsibility – especially in the areas of data management and project coordination. What motivated me most was seeing how my work had a direct impact on company-wide processes. The project not only deepened my interest in project management and data-related topics, but also showed me how crucial clear communication is between business and technical teams. Looking back, it was an incredibly educational and fulfilling experience.
If you had to describe the team at Hellmann in three words, what would they be – and why?
Supportive, diverse, and inspiring! “Supportive” because colleagues genuinely help each other, creating a strong sense of community. “Diverse” because in our seven-person team, we represent six different countries, which brings a wide range of perspectives and ideas to our collaboration. And “inspiring” because the combination of team spirit and international cooperation constantly motivates me to grow and think outside the box. What I find especially impressive is how different everyone is in terms of personality and working style – yet we work together seamlessly. This diversity of approaches and ideas creates a balanced, supportive, and highly effective team dynamic.
