"Every day is different!"
From apprentice to branch manager: Michael talks about his stations at Hellmann
Hi Michael, thank you very much for sharing your experience with us! You’ve been the branch manager at the Osnabrück location since 2023, but your story with Hellmann goes back further: How did it all begin?
I have been with Hellmann since 2007. After secondary school, I started an apprenticeship as a freight forwarding agent at Hellmann, and after the apprenticeship, I first went into service. Then I worked in a staff position conducting improvement processes and projects, was the head of cargo handling for 3 years, and worked in various commercial areas in Osnabrück for 4 years.
But your path also led you to Bielefeld...
In Bielefeld, I was a freight forwarding manager for one year and a branch manager for two years. It was a very exciting time in Bielefeld because it was the first time I had moved from my "home base" Osnabrück to another location and all my colleagues were "new" to me.
Furthermore, in the past, as a department head, I only had partial process responsibility. By relocation to Bielefeld, I had complete responsibility for an entire location for the first time.

Now you are the branch manager in Osnabrück? Why this position?
Since my apprenticeship, it has been my dream to take over the branch management in OSN at some point. Hellmann is one of the largest employers in the Osnabrück region and I am fascinated to run the largest road location. Why? Every day is completely different and I am extremely grateful for the trust. It is very exciting to see how the colleagues and the location are developing.
Looking back on your time at Hellmann, what has been your greatest professional success so far?
First of all, definitely that I was allowed to become branch manager of the Osnabrück location. Many colleagues knew me from my time in Osnabrück, and I was warmly welcomed by so many colleagues. Many were very happy to see each other again. That was the most moving moment for me so far!
But a change in leadership also means changes and I am extremely proud of the Osnabrück team, which really did an outstanding job. We have all been able to achieve good results together and that is of course also an important factor.

You mentioned your team at the location. How do you experience the collaboration?
We are a great mix of young colleagues and experienced colleagues, of "new" colleagues and long-standing employees. All are characterized by an openness to new ideas, fun in further development and great commitment. I like to encourage and challenge my team. Because as a leader, you can only win with the team!
Michael's tips for new colleaguesI did my apprenticeship at Hellmann at the age of 17 and I remember I was very excited. When you're fresh out of school, you have a lot of respect for big companies. But at Hellmann, you can really get in touch with anyone, and everyone is genuinely eager to help with any questions. This has been confirmed over many years. So, be brave and just apply!
