Supply chains would be interrupted and supermarket shelves would be empty. Therefore, logistics is one of the most future-proof industries of all. How can I support my child?

Way to work

The journey to the apprenticeship location is an important aspect. If the apprenticeship location is not within walking distance, your child can use public transport, such as the Deutschlandticket (in some locations, we also subsidize the Jobticket). Alternatively, a carpool with other apprentices can be organized, or a bicycle can be used. Most locations also offer parking facilities for those who come by car. Check in advance which means of transport are available.

Distance to work

Is the commute feasible for my child? It is important to realistically assess the daily commute and consider whether it is feasible for your child. Use online route planners or apps to find the best connection. Pay attention to the duration and possible alternatives in case of delays, especially if your child does not have their own car. It is also important to consider weather conditions (e.g., is there an alternative to cycling in case of ice?). This way, you can ensure that your child arrives at the training location on time and stress-free.

Promotion of child’s independence

Independence is an important step in professional development. Support your child by encouraging them to report sick and organize appointments independently. It is also a good idea to promote self-organization with a calendar app, so your child has an overview of their own appointments and gets used to working with schedules. Give them tips on how to best prepare for the workday and be there for questions without doing everything for them.

Job interview etiquette

 A job interview is the first impression your child makes at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. Neat and appropriate clothing is therefore crucial. Recommended are a shirt, a simple top or blouse, combined with dress pants, plain jeans, or a skirt. Avoid overly flashy or casual clothing (e.g., leggings, jogging pants, crop tops, shorts, band T-shirts). A neat appearance shows respect and professionalism.

Career orientation

Engaging with your child Choosing the right training is a joint process. Sit down with your child and discuss their strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Use open house days and career fairs to learn about different training professions and companies. We at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics are regularly on the road in many cities. This way, you can find out together which profession best suits your child’s skills and preferences. We also recommend an internship in advance to get a taste of the training profession. For our commercial training professions, a trial day is also mandatory.

Financial support

During training, there are various options for financial support. Find out about government assistance such as vocational training allowance (BAB), student BAföG, or housing allowance. Hellmann also supports with a travel allowance to vocational school from 55km, a training allowance, a reduced Hansefit rate, holiday and Christmas bonuses, and capital-forming benefits. Together, you should look at what costs your child will incur (fuel costs, possibly rent, food, leisure) and how these costs will be covered (training salary, subsidies, possibly support from parents).
